.the first fried mee siam

fried mee siam.

I have been suffering from a pretty bad indigestion over the past couple of days.. 2 nights and 3 bags of peppermint tea later, I'm well again and have lots of cravings! One of the dishes I'm wanting to eat was fried mee siam, and I have no idea why.

At Info Design class this afternoon, I was craving for fried mee siam and decided to have it for dinner.

Problem is, I've never cooked this before.. But I just had to have it! So I grab whatever (suitable) ingredients I have in my pantry, cut in some chili and shallots, mix all the ingredients together and pan-fry accordingly.

The result? It's OH-SO-GOOD!!! But considering the fact that I haven't had fried mee siam for years, I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to taste like...

But again, it's so good! I think I'm going to buy more ingredients tomorrow or day after. Hehe!

.i'm not a huge fan of pink stuff...

Pocky.

But there are exceptions. :) I like Pocky - especially the strawberry flavored ones. And I am sure you do too, or will if you haven't already tried one.

So for those of you who haven't, what are you waiting for? Go get some!!! It's easily available in most Asian countries.. As for the others, I'm sure you can find them in major oriental supermarkets.

Mmmm.. x)

Today's July 14th and it also happens to be one of my cousins birthday.. So.. Happy Birthday Yuki!!!

.we heart campbell

Campbell's soups are the best!

One of us likes chicken soup.. And the other likes mushroom soup. I reckon this happens to a lot of other couples or family members a lot and so Campbell has decided to come up with a combination of both - Cream of Chicken and Mushroom soup.

I don't know how healthy this is (probably not as healthy since it's canned soup) but it's so good that we could eat 2 - 3 cans in 1.5 week. Umm.. Okay, is that a little too much?

Oh and just so you know, this soup goes really well with garlic bread. :)

.100

100 tea bags

SF and I went grocery shopping at Woolworths the other day to stock up for our very empty cupboard and fridge.

And.. Well, everyone knows that I can't live without tea, and I drink tea almost everyday. So I had to stock up on my all time favorite Dilmah Ceylon tea and headed over to the tea section.

There are packets of 50, 100 or 200 tea bags. I was going to grab the pack of 50 and thought I'd check out the price of 100 tea bags.

50 tea bags – $2.99
100 tea bags – $2.99

"Huh??? They are the same price??? Really!!???!?" I thought.

So I dragged SF over and asked him to double check for me, because I simply couldn't believe my eyes. I think the boy got a shock too but didn't show it. He merely said, "Just grab the pack of 100, if you want?"

And that's how I ended up with this huge packet of Ceylon tea. And I'm sure we'll use up the tea bags before we know it. :D

.zongzi

Zongzi.

Zongzi, or glutinous rice dumpling, is one of my all time favorite food! In Australia, these are only available in May/June during the Dragon Boat Festival while in Malaysia, it's available everyday of the year.

.malaysian delicacies

Laksa for Dinner.

I was born in Malaysia, grew up in Singapore, spent majority of my school vacations in Australia, and relocated to Australia 4 years ago.

Being away for 4 years have made me appreciate Malaysian food more. So far, I have not found any authentic and delicious Malaysian cuisine over here, so SF and I resorted to cooking at home. It's much nicer and not to mention, cheaper as well!

I will be in Malaysia for about a month in November (can't leave for too long because I'm waiting to see if I become Permanent Resident in Australia) and I'm going to eat like there's no tomorrow! Let's hope I'll get to return for the Lunar New Year in 2009 for a while too or even better, become a PR before then!

.something that i didn't know about him

Home-made Carbonara Fettucine.

SF and I learned something new about each other this weekend.
________________________
Scenario #1
SF: "How come we never buy one of those carbonara sauce from Safeway? I like it too!"
_pdra: "Wow really? I thought you never liked it! That's why we didn't buy."

I never realize that SF loves carbonara just as much as I do. So yay! Guess we'll get to eat carbonara pasta's more often!

Scenario #2

We were talking about having carbonara fettucine for dinner tonight and SF found out something new about me in between the conversation.

_pdra: "Actually, I like fettucine more than spaghetti."
SF: "Huh??? Really??? I always thought you liked spaghetti more that's why we'd always buy spaghetti rather than fettucine. I also prefer fettucine!"
_pdra: "Wow really!?!? I didn't know!!! I always thought you preferred spaghetti that's why we'd go for spaghetti rather than fettucine."
SF: "Nooooo. Fettucine is nicer."

.the goodness of nutella

Nutella Muffin.

So the other night, Aryen and I decided to bake some chocolate muffins. We've been talking about baking stuff together for nearly a month now and so it finally happened on Sunday night.

This recipe includes Nutella (yay!).. And I ended up putting half tub (close to 1 cup, 250ml) into the mixing bowl, along with all the other ingredients. I know, it sounds kinda like me wasting Nutella but I think it was worth it. It's the one of the best home-made I've ever tried!!!!! XD

The baking took us about 1.5 hour.. It was worth the wait. I'll post up the recipe when I'm not too lazy busy. :)

Update: Recipe's up @ Recipes by Students! Check it out here!

.sofia restaurant

SF and I went on a double date dinner tonight at Sofia Restaurant in Camberwell tonight. The four of us had a great time catching up and talking about random stuff that's been going on around us – bubble tea, job issues, wow-so-much-food, restaurants around the city, etc..!

Anyways, I'm not good at reviewing stuff so I'm just going to type what comes in my mind.

First, I thought you might wanna know what we've ordered to share.. We decided to have the *refers to restaurant manual* Spaghetti Carbonara (creamy, with bits of ham), Spaghetti Marinara (with prawns), Meatlover Pizza and Fritto Misto (seafood plate). x)

Spaghetti Carbonara

Spaghetti Marinara

Meatlover Pizza

Fritto Misto

I told myself that I would have to eat fast and forget about dieting today.. Because if I don't, I'll get full by the time I finish the first serving of spaghetti. So I did.. But still, I ended up full pretty quickly. :\

Aftermath.

The meal was AWESOME though! I haven't been to an Italian restaurant for quite a while now. The staff at Sofia were really generous with the ingredients and everything.. So the servings were HUGE. We ended up taking away all four dishes!

Thanks for the meal guys! We'll see you guys real soon okay??? :D

.coincidental?

Double egg yolk.

SF was cooking some Maggi chicken flavored instant noodles last night. Just as he took an egg out of the fridge, he thought to himself, "How nice if there were two egg yolks inside this egg...."

And he got a shock of his life after he cracked open the egg and add it into the sauce pan. There were 2 egg yolks beneath the egg shell and the whole thought was actually random!!!

:| :O :| :O :| :O

SF was freaked out and surprised at the same time.. But since he was starving to death, he didn't question the egg anymore and started gobbling the bowl of noodles. LOL.

.iron eggs

Iron Eggs a.k.a. Tea Leaf Eggs.

SF's new trademark dish! :D I am so going to miss these when he takes off for Singapore early next year... :\ Oh well. I should learn from him while I can.

.prata

Roti prata.

Home cooked and authentic...

Few more times of prata and he will be gone... And I'll have to wait for another 2 (or worse, 3-4) years until I get to try his cooking again...

:\

Why am I so emo?

.click here for some mouthwatering butter cookies!

Butter biscuits.

So it was around 11.35pm last night when I gleefully announced to SF that I was going bake butter biscuits.

Me: "I wanna make butter cookies!" XD
SF: "NOW!?"
Me: "Yes! The cleaners are coming by tomorrow anyways, so might as well bake now and save cleaning time."
SF: "Okok, if you want. *mumbles: 'so free...*"

The cleaners were really coming by this morning anyways.. But I guess they are lucky that the only mess on the kitchen counter top was a small amount of caster sugar.

The butter cookies are soooooo easy to make that I spent just a little over an hour on the preparing/baking. Yes, it's that simple! :)

And I'd like to thank Karen Cheng for the recipe. Click here if you would like to try the recipe too!

.2-dollars chocolate cake

$2 chocolate cake.

While shopping for groceries and dinner stuff at Coles this afternoon, Aryen saw this chocolate cake mix from the baking section and decided that she wants to bake tonight.

And so I decided to join in the baking session. I reckon she did most of the work while all I did was mix a little bit and added Nutella and sugar in addition to the pre-mix.

The mix spent close to an hour in the oven... And it turned out really good!!! Next, I got SF to apply chocolate mixing (also from the packet) onto the cake.

Everyone liked it. I think the cake got Aryen and myself a little too excited that we decided that we are going to bake cheese cake next week. Oh, and curry puffs this Sunday. Loads to do! :)

.the real happy meal

お好み焼き.

When 5 people get together to have dinner.

.cultural night

Sushi for Dinner.

I was still feeling a little crummy the day after I arrived back in Melbourne.. And was craving for sushi. I'd always crave for Japanese food (particularly sushi rolls) when I'm not being my best.....

So I made an announcement to everyone that I will be making sushi the following night, which is Tuesday.

Inari sushi.

Californian rolls with Salmon, avocado and cucumber.

Nigiri with sashimi salmon.

And I we did. The five of us, SF, SY, Aryen, Gin and myself contributed to the sushi-making process that night. It was actually quite fun having so many people cook dinner together, and it felt like we were celebrating "Japanese Day" or something, with everyone trying to come up with one or two Japanese words and phrases while cooking and dining.

Nigiri with unagi (eel) and sashimi salmon.

After dinner, we continued to sit around the dining table for some good chatting session and also enjoyed some green tea. I have a feeling that I'm going to make them all (particularly the new comers Aryen and SY) addicted to tea. :D

Dinner has not been this warm for a while. And I'd like to thank all of them for making it such a great one!

.favorite food

Hot chocolate.

Cream of mushroom soup.

Fried mac & cheese.

Friday's cheese burger.

I love dining in at TGI Friday's! It has been nearly a decade since I first came across this restaurant - we decided to try out a new place for our weekly Sunday dinner and decided to drop by TGI F's.

I fell in love with their cream of mushroom soup, as well as their trademark cheese burger since then, and am still loving it! :)

Hmmmmm... x)

Oh, and the fried mac and cheese is a new dish introduced (probably) a few months ago. It's pretty great, but I reckon it could be cheesier. ;P

And and and, also, their hot chocolate's one of the best! I love the fact that they've added whipped cream on top of the drink!!! Unhealthy but satisfying!!! ^^
